Plate Number Single of the Month:
Scott 1208, plate number 27392 The "Plate Number Single of the Month" for June -- for Flag Day -- is the 5¢ Flag Over White House stamp of 1963, Scott 1208. The stamp violated UPU-agreed stamp design rules by not including the name of the issuing country (Britain was the only allowed exception, since they had issued the first postage stamps and instead included a portrait of the monarch). However, BEP designers apparently felt the flag image met that rule without having to add "U.S. Postage" or "USA" to the stamp design. The stamp was issued both untagged and tagged. Known plate number varieties include Bureau precancels, local precancels, examples with pre-printing paper folds, misperfs, as well as a proof printed entirely in the blue-gray color. Click here or on View Examples on any APNSS web page to view examples of plate number singles over the years, as well as PNS of special issues such as airmail, parcel post and revenue stamps and proofs.
The flag counter replaces an earlier counter which logged nearly 30,000 visits.
