The Banknote issues
These issues are referred to as "Banknotes" because they used common
designs, but were printed by three separate private security printers:
National Bank Note Company, Continental Bank Note Company, and American
Bank Note Company.
None of these companies used unique plate numbers. Typically, plate
number 1 was assigned to one value in each series, plate 2 to another
value, and so on. When they printed a new series of stamps, plate
number 1 was assigned again.
