The Banknote issues

These issues are referred to as "Banknotes" because they used common designs, but were printed by three separate private security printers: National Bank Note Company, Continental Bank Note Company, and American Bank Note Company.

None of these companies used unique plate numbers. Typically, plate number 1 was assigned to one value in each series, plate 2 to another value, and so on. When they printed a new series of stamps, plate number 1 was assigned again.

These private companies also printed Official stamps and Revenue stamps during the same period.
